Chapter 18

Johnny called Kate at her office. “Zane Davies was just here fishing for information.”

“What did he want?” asked Kate.

“He was asking about new evidence. Do you think Ormsby might have mentioned that he saw a picture of the necklace on Eugene’s flash drive?”

Kate thought for a minute. “No. The chief warned him not to. And I was under the impression that Andy had only met Zane once or twice at the glass center. They move in completely different circles. The people who know about the flash drive are Jablonsky, Antoine and the other detectives, you, me, Ormsby … oh, and Irene, the librarian. It’s got to be her. I wonder if she knows Zane, I mean, he’s a master’s student, he doesn’t have a study carrel but he frequents the library. I’m going to call her. Talk to you later.”

Kate made a few notes to herself before she called Irene. The conversation had to have a certain tone to it so that Irene wouldn’t feel like a suspect.

“Hi, Irene, Dr. Chambers here. I wanted to call and thank you for all your help with locating the flash drive. That was surprising, wasn’t it? I hope it helps find Eugene Rose’s killer. He was such a fixture at the library—do many people ask after him?” Kate was hoping she struck the right balance between a thank you and sympathizing over the loss of a student.

“A few. The most recent was Zane Davies, whom I know. I think Zane said that he and Eugene were roommates at one time. Must be hard to experience murder at such a tender age. It’s hard on me and I’ve seen my share of sunrises!”

“I know what you mean. I think about Eugene’s family. I paid a condolence call and it turns out that Eugene’s grandmother was a glass collector. His interest in glass must be genetic. What did Zane think, I mean when you mentioned we had a picture of the necklace and pendant?”

“Oh, Zane was tremendously interested—of course he and Eugene shared a love for art objects and art history.” There it is, there is the leak—an innocent leak, but one nevertheless, thought Kate.

“Thanks again, Irene. You’ve helped the police find a significant clue. I hope to see you soon.” Kate ended the conversation, swiveled her desk chair and began to doodle on her notepad. All in all, the chief had been generous lately with her requests to be included in things. This time she would just give him the facts and not ask for anything in return—paying it forward was always a good idea.

Q

Zane and Sarah Braithwaite were having a heart-to-heart conversation at her house. They sat on the couch in front of a coffee table littered with a few beer bottles and an empty pizza box, talking about going back to Italy; they both agreed that it would be different without Eugene.

Someone pounded on the front door. Sarah jumped up, shaking; after the recent break-in, any unexpected noise brought terror with it.
